īut there are many aḥādīth that show the best time for the witr salat to be at night. In a hadith transmitted by Abu Darda, he states that Muhammad enjoined to him three things: to fast three days every month, to offer the witr salat before sleep, and to offer two raka'at sunnah for fajr. Therefore, as little as one raka'ah can be prayed, and eleven at most.Īccording to Abdullah ibn Umar, Muhammad said, "The night prayer is offered as two raka'at followed by two raka'at and so on and if anyone is afraid of the approaching dawn (fajr prayer), he should pray one raka'ah and this will be a witr for all the raka'at which he has prayed before." Witr has an odd number of raka'at prayed in pairs, with the final raka'ah prayed separately. Any Zikr apart from these is only Sunnah and does not require that we perform the prostration of forgetfulness for it.Witr ( Arabic: وتر) is an Islamic prayer ( salat) that is performed at night after Isha (night-time prayer) or before fajr (dawn prayer). The author of ‘Al Ikhtiyar Li Ta’alil Al Mukhtar’ (who is a Hanafi) writes: ' The prostration of forgetfulness is not to be performed for any kind of Zikr except the recitation of the Qur'an in the prayer, the two Tashahhud (after two Rak’ah and at the end of 4 Rak’ah) the Qunut and the Takbeer in the two Eid (Fitr and Adha) because the mentioned forms are obligatory. The Hanafi believe that it is mandatory on the one who forgets Qunut in Witr to perform the prostrations of forgetfulness. But the Shafi’e prefer that such a person performs the prostrations of forgetfulness if this Witr is in the second half of Ramadan.
So whoever forgets it does not have to do anything in compensation. Qunut Du’a is not obligatory in Witr prayer. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
